Andy: This rum is absolutely repugnant straight. It has the aroma of unleaded and tastes like diesel. I first tried it straight on the rocks, and there are no words to describe how bad this rum is straight. I could feel it numbing my brain…not in a good way. This rum is so bad straight, I wouldn’t drink it with George Bush’s lips. We then tried it with Pepsi One hoping to take some of the harshness away. It did soften it some, but this rum does not bring a lot of flavor to the table. Certainly not one of my favorites, but I would definitely drink it before a lot of the well drinks out there. | |||||||||||||||
Adrian: This rum is the staple of every bar on earth. One thing you can guarantee hearing at one point in the night, “Bacardi and Coke please.” Tasting it straight on the rocks is a bit difficult to handle. After mixing with Diet and lime, it reminds you of those college days when you felt like you were stepping up in the world and not ordering the bargain basement rum. |

Ugh. This (along with Captain Morgan) was my idea of what rum was in college.
Now that I know that rum isn’t supposed to taste like rubbing alcohol, I spend a little more.
Here’s a little guide to buying things.
The money you spend on things gets split up into several places:
1. The person/store you’re buying the thing from.
2. The people that own the company
3. Advertising
4. Research and development
5. Legal and other support for the company
6. Supplies and manufacturing costs (the actual product)
Hint: have you seen a lot of ads for something? That means #3 is getting a disproportionate share of the budget. This makes sense for the company from a business perspective, but guarantees that you can find a better product elsewhere.

People that say they hate rum more than likely Bacardi is the only one they’ve ever tried in either gold or superior form. It’s been a long time but I remember this as being absolutely filthy tasting.

Sometimes you want a RUM that can be drank on all occasions right out of the bottle. This is perfect ……. no sipping or sniffing. Just a good honest RUM after work, before you begin the rest of your day.

This may not be a great Rum, or even a good one, but it is what got me started drinking rum. I can’t remember why, but I stopped by my parents house one night with my girlfriend. They had just sat down to watch their favorite TV show, Barney Miller, and they asked us to watch it with them and my mother made us a drink. I had never seen the TV show, nor had a rum and coke, but I laughed my ass off and so did my girlfriend. The following Thursday we were wondering what to do and my girlfriend suggested stopping by my parents and watching Barney Miller with them. We called and were invited and again had a great time. We didn’t even bother to call after that, we just showed up and watched Barney Miller and drank rum & cokes with them. After about two months of this we missed it one night and my mother called asking if something had happened.
I learned that there are much better rums than Bacardi, but still, when I pass by it at the liquor store I pause, remember the good times, consider it, but as I extend my hand to grab a bottle I catch myself and grab a bottle of Mount Gay instead.
