Andy: This rum does not have a very strong aroma. The taste is not bad, and it has quite a bite and a little harshness, but that seems to complement it. You can taste the quality and the age. It is very rich. Not my absolute favorite straight as Mount Gay Extra Old goes down smoother. After mixing with Pepsi One, I find it gets lost in the soda. This is not a rum to be enjoyed with mixers. Zaya 12 year is a little fruitier and with Ron Zacapa being around $40 a bottle I don’t think it is worth the extra money. |

Adrian: Widely recognized around the world to be one of the best rums, it is a very rich rum from beginning to end. It is very nice with no strong or harsh flavors. Mixing it with cola, the richness has turned into sweetness. If you drink this rum side by side with the Zaya 12 year, they taste pretty similar, a very minute difference. |

Interesting you mention the age – all should realise this is a solera system rum and therefore it is not truly 23yr old – only a portion (undisclosed) is of that age and the rum starts at 6year old. This is why you do not get the depth of a Mount Gay Extra Old or an Appleton 12 or 21yo (the latter being true minimim ageings).

Ron Zacapa 23 is one of the best sipping rums you can find under $50 a bottle. Aged at high altitudes, it has a depth and smoothness that comes from the solara method of blending rums of various ages from 1 to 23 years. You would not want to mix this rum, but if you must, only add a few drops as anything else would corrupt the wonderful caramel and almost burnt maple sugar flavors embodied in this fine spirit.

As Peyer said Solera systems only give you the date of the oldest spirit in the mix. Much more of a dessert rum, it’s just not something I enjoy too much but it can be nice with a good cigar.
